Sub-meters

Sub-meters are usually installed in properties with multiple units to track individual water use. It enables water charges to be billed directly to each unit owner (or tenant) based on their actual usage.

Sub-meters for existing properties

Before applying, you may need to obtain authorisation from the owner corporation or other unit owners.

Only a licensed plumber can apply for sub-meters, and Barwon Water is responsible for installing the sub-meters.

For existing properties, only 20 mm sub-meters can be installed. If you require a sub-meter larger than 20 mm, or need to install sub-metering in a new site, you must apply for development.

Sub-meters for developments

For development projects (such as dual-occupancy, multi-story buildings, and/or subdivisions) sub-meters will be outlined in the deed.

If you do not have a deed you will first need to apply for development. For more information, see our Development page.

If you have a deed that includes sub-meters, when the pipework is complete and ready for sub-meter installation, the plumber must request sub-meter installation.
