Sub-meters are usually installed in properties with multiple units to track individual water use. It enables water charges to be billed directly to each unit owner (or tenant) based on their actual usage.
Before applying, you may need to obtain authorisation from the owner corporation or other unit owners.
Only a licensed plumber can apply for sub-meters, and Barwon Water is responsible for installing the sub-meters.
For existing properties, only 20 mm sub-meters can be installed. If you require a sub-meter larger than 20 mm, or need to install sub-metering in a new site, you must apply for development.

Authorisation to install sub-meters
When a multi-unit property is owned by a single person or entity, authorisation to install sub-meters is not required.
However, when individual unit owners wish to install sub-metering, approval from the owners corporation or other unit owners may be necessary.
The authorisation form must be completed by the secretary of the owners corporation or unit owners, and submitted to the plumber. Only a licensed plumber can apply for sub-meters.
Barwon Water reserves the right to request that the owners corporation ask all unit owners to install sub-meters or to mandate that all units within the property be sub-metered.
