Other authorities works
If you are planning works on behalf of a government authority or a utility company, you must notify us if the planned works will take place on or near our assets.
We will work with you to ensure the planned works are conducted safely, and will not put our assets at risk.
Notify us of planned works
Use our online form to notify us of the planned works, and find out if you need to apply for development.
All planned works need to be assessed by our team to ensure our assets are protected.
Notify us of planned works
Before you notify us
We will ask you to:
- provide the location of the works
- detail how the works will impact our assets
- submit the design plan.
Response time
We will assess notifications within 12 working days.
Assessment
All planned works need to be assessed by our team to ensure our assets are protected.
We will review the design plan to ensure it meets our technical requirements, including clearances (vertical, horizontal and cover).
For minimum clearances, see our Supplement to the WSAA Water Supply code of Australia (2011, current) (PDF 2.0 MB).
For a list of approved products, materials and design standards, see our products and standards.
Information requests
We may need to ask you for more information, or design revisions, before we can provide a response to the planned works.
If design changes are needed, we will ask you to submit a revised design plan.
Responses
When we have completed our assessment, we will provide a response.
There are two possible outcomes.
- Barwon Water has no objection to the planned works.
- Barwon Water objects to the planned works.
1. No objection
We will not object to the planned works if:
- the design plan meets our technical requirements
- no other risks have been identified.
2. Objection
We may object to the planned works, especially if they are on or near our strategic assets.
Barwon Water’s assets are safeguarded by the Water Act 1989: they cannot be worked on, altered or relocated without our consent.
If you need to apply for development
We will advise you if the planned works require a development application.
You may need to apply for development when planned the works:
- are within 3.0 m of a Barwon Water pipeline that is 300 mm diameter or greater
- include a request to alter or relocate our assets
- involve live assets, including water main connections
- require lifting a access chamber cover (maintenance hole lid).
If you need to apply for development, you must engage a Barwon Water accredited consultant and accredited contractors to manage and carry out the planned works.
Depending on the nature of the works, you may need to submit and receive approval for:
- an activity method statement (AMS)
- water main shutdowns
- works on or near Barwon Water assets.
