Prevent blockages – never flush wipes

18 Jan 2024

Barwon Water is reminding people of the importance of putting wipes in the bin, not in the toilet.

Wipes cause big issues in the sewer network and in household plumbing. They are one of the main culprits for causing blockages and spills.

To help get the message out, there will be a pop-up information stand at Geelong Waterfront at Eastern Beach this Friday and Saturday to remind people to only flush the three Ps: poo, pee and (toilet) paper.

Barwon Water Chief Scientist Dr Will Buchanan said wipes should never be flushed as they don’t break down like toilet paper.

“When people flush wet wipes it causes blockages that can lead to sewage spilling into streets and people’s properties.

“Blockages are expensive and time consuming to fix, not to mention very unpleasant for everyone."

“The message is clear. If it isn’t toilet paper, it goes in the bin. Set up a bin next to your toilet if you need to.”

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan is also urging people not to flush wipes.

“We’re installing new signage in our public toilets to remind people that only toilet paper should be flushed.

“On peak days we have up to 10,000 visitors to our beautiful Waterfront. It’s up to all of us to do the right thing. Help us look after our public spaces and dispose of wipes in the bins provided.”
