Celebrating water efficiency at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College

27 Jun 2024

Thanks to their participation in our Schools Water Efficiency Program, Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College fixed a significant leak saving thousands of litres of water.

An alert via the school’s data-logger, which was installed as part of the program, led to the discovery of a water leak under one of their asphalt areas.

If left unrepaired for a year, approximately 3.9 million litres of water could have been lost, costing the school around $13,000 on their water bill.

Since 2012, thanks to SWEP and Barwon Water’s support, SWEP schools have collectively saved more than 1.1 billion litres of drinking water and $3.4 million in water-related charges.

We encourage other schools to sign up to receive the benefits of the water-saving program.

Thanks to funding assistance from Barwon Water and the Victorian Government, it’s free for schools to sign up.

SWEP includes curriculum resources and is a great way to combine maths, science and environmental studies for students using real-world examples.

We also have a dedicated schools education program to support schools and the broader community to use water sustainably.
