Barwon Water has started work to construct a new high-quality water treatment plant to service the town of Gellibrand.
Barwon Water Managing Director Shaun Cumming said the work was part of Barwon Water’s ongoing investment in safe, secure, high-quality drinking water.
“Over the next five years, we are investing more than $18 million to upgrade the Gellibrand and Forrest water treatment plants.
“This is an investment in a secure water future to support our Otway communities as well as the thriving visitor economy.
“As part of the Gellibrand work, we will construct a new plant that is more bushfire resilient, reliable and efficient, with the latest technology to ensure we continue to provide high quality and affordable services for our customers and community.
“Construction is taking place at the site of the existing water treatment plant on Old Beech Forest Road. Once the new plant is built and operational, we’ll decommission the old plant.”
The town of Gellibrand is supplied with water from Lardner Creek, which is treated at the Gellibrand water treatment plant using specialised treatment to meet safe drinking water standards.
Works began last month and will be completed by late 2025.
During construction of the new plant, the existing water treatment plant will continue to operate as usual and there should be no interruption to residents’ water supply.
