Algal bloom at Bostock Reservoir
17 Jan 2020
We’re monitoring a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom at Bostock Reservoir.
Barwon Water is currently not sourcing drinking water from this reservoir, therefore drinking water supplies are not affected, and our water remains 100% safe to drink.
Blue-green algae occur naturally and grow in specific conditions, generally when there is sunny, still weather and elevated nutrient levels.
The bloom was likely caused by the burst of warm and sunny weather, resulting in the reservoir appearing green and having an odour. This is completely normal for this type of event.
We optimise and adjust our treatment plant processes to ensure to continued supply of safe, high-quality drinking water.
We’ve posted some signage at the reservoir to alert visitors. While you can still enjoy birdwatching, walking, mountain biking and picnicking, we advise against fishing until the bloom clears and the signs are removed.
We will continue to closely monitor the reservoir and advise of any changes.
